Vice Chairman clarifies role

By Marieta Heidi Ilalio

Vice Chairman clarifies role The Vice Chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union (SRU), Lefau Harry Schuster has clarified his involvement in the construction of a fence surrounding the High Performance Unit (HPU), at Tuana’imato.

The Vice Chairman’s involvement has raised eyebrows among members of the public who questioned whether this was appropriate. Lefau says his involvement is on a voluntary basis.

He’s supervising the project because the SRU needed his help.  Asked why it was not tendered, Lefau says the SRU cannot afford to.
The fence covers 36 acres of land and the cost of the project would be too expensive for the cash-stricken union.

Lefau points out there are many areas where the Union’s money can be spent. For instance, he says the age grade teams, namely the Under 20s, are preparing for a major tournament.  The Women’s team also needs financial assistance.

“There are many development areas we can use the money for,” he says.
Lefau says the only cost to the SRU in relation to the fence project is money for some of the men he’s recruited to do the labour work.

Asked for a comment, Chief Executive Officer of SRU, Su’a Peter Schuster, said the work is being done internally to save money. He asked for further questions to be emailed to him.
At press time last night, he had not responded to the email.
