Jack Chen deported

By Taina Kami Enoka

Jack Chen deported Embattled Chinese businessman Guofeng Jack Chen must leave Samoa today. That’s what a deportation order dated 2 February 2012 and signed by Prime Minister and Minister of Immigration, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, says.

The letter lists the reasons for deportation as follows: “That Mr Chen continues to remain in Samoa after the cancellation of his temporary resident permit (Section 32 (1) (d) of the Act).

“I direct the deportation be undertaken using an aircraft / airline to China via Fiji and be undertaken by Sunday, 5th February, 2012.”
Mr Chen told the Sunday Samoan yesterday that he received the letter on Thursday but he says there are

no flights to China today and the earliest he can leave is on Tuesday.

Yesterday, he was trying to sell his assets that included his gift shop which he had opened late last year.
Mr Chen still does not understand the reasons why Immigration wants him out of the country.

He had first heard of Samoa while he was in China. Mr Chen then came here in September 2009, and opened a hair salon at the Lotemau Building in Apia.
“I made many friends here,” he said. But in 2010, his work permit was cancelled, leaving him with no option but to leave Samoa.

In September last year, he returned and opened a gift shop in Apia only to have his Temporary Resident’s Permit cancelled on December 23, 2011 in a letter signed by Tuilaepa.
Mr Chen pleaded with Sunday Samoan to go and interview his employees and colleagues who could give testimony of his good character.

“I don’t know why Immigration has not given me the opportunity to contribute to development. I did not cheat. I did not lie.
“I just need more time to sell my things before I go back to China. I feel very sad that this is happening.”
