Malae o Tiafau cleared

Malae o Tiafau cleared The  ‘Malae o Tiafau’ is undergoing a facelift. The grass has been scooped by heavy machinery to make way for new grass to be planted on the surface, which will be elevated.

Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Fepuleai Atila Ropati said this was determined following a survey that “identified s

ome areas of the field are below sea level.” The issue was raised by the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Police.

“It is one of the reasons why some [police] officers during the guard of honour trip over.” Fepulea’i said the plans are not new.
But the Independence Committee has decided to make improvements on the field before the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, in June.

After the grass is removed, the ground will be elevated.
“The plan also includes an extension made to the field so that it can accommodate the many people who will be taking part in the celebrations.”

The majority of activities planned for Samoa’s 50th Independence Celebrations will be held on the field at Tiafau.
The work on the field and the extension is being carried out by Ulia Construction, Fepulea'i confirmed.
