Let’s defend ‘freedom’

By Lanuola Tusani Tupufia

Let’s defend ‘freedom’ The Tautua Samoa Party is calling everyone who is against the decision to tear down Samoa’s first Fale Fono at Malae o Tiafau today, to stand together with them to defend the last memory of Samoa’s struggle for Independence.

Leader Palusalue Fa’apo II tells the Samoa Observer they will gather in front of the old Maota Fono today to show the Government how they strongly object to their decision.  He says there are a lot of people who are unhappy with the demolition of the historical place and he wants them to join them and show their disapproval.

“We are calling out to everyone and

all the people who are against this to show their support to defend and protect the house to join us here tomorrow (Thursday 8 March 2012).
“We want the Government to understand and know how the people feel about what they are about to do.”

Palusalue can only hope that the silent protest will stop the tearing down of the memorable fale fono.
He says today will be the last time they will see the birthplace of Samoa and he is sad to know that the fale fono will soon be gone forever.

“It’s our last chance to say goodbye to this beautiful and unforgettable house. We are sad about it and our love goes out to the fale fono. It consists of the memory of our forefathers and their struggle for our freedom but also a tribute of our Independence (in 1962).”

The Tautua Leader also said even if a memorial stone is to be placed at where the Fale Fono is or a new one will be established “it will never be the same and does not hold the dignity and memories of the past like this one”.

Members of the Tautua Samoa Party held a photo session in front of the old Fale Fono yesterday in the hopes of capturing the face of the past and to keep as souvenirs before it’s erased.
